Relaxing inside a sauna is a wonderful bonding activity for families. Prepare your children properly by teaching them these rules:
Use the buddy system.
Kids should only use a sauna with supervision. Tell them never to plug in the sauna by themselves, and to always inform you if they wish to use the sauna.
Wear minimal clothing.
It only takes a few minutes inside a home sauna for the body to heat up and produce intense sweat. That’s why sauna users should wear as little clothing as possible and ideally just take a small towel with them inside the unit. This is good practice for children as well. But if they’re more comfortable wearing clothes, choose a bathing suit made of breathable fabric to prevent overheating.
Don’t wear accessories.
Aside from clothes, ask your children to take off bracelets, necklaces, and other accessories prior to entering the sauna. Metal jewelry can heat up and burn the skin, while other materials such as plastic can stick to the skin and cause discomfort.
Drink lots of water.
Train kids to drink plenty of water before, during, and after using a home infrared sauna. Take the time to explain why – drinking water replenishes the fluids and electrolytes lost as a person sweats inside the sauna, and it helps them avoid feeling lightheaded and dizzy during the session.
Fun tip: encourage them to stay hydrated by serving refreshing, yummy drinks like cold juice in addition to glasses of water.
Stay for only a few minutes at a time.
No matter how long you’ve been using a sauna, it’s generally recommended to only stay up to 15-20 minutes. Children have much lower tolerance than adults, so invite them inside for only a few minutes at a time to keep the experience pleasant and safe. Ask them how they feel from time to time – do they feel good, is it too hot, etc. – and emphasize that they can step outside anytime they feel the need to do so.
Cool off properly.
After using the sauna, kids might want to jump into the shower or the pool immediately, but remind them to wait. The body needs some time to adjust from the extremely hot temperatures of the sauna to the colder temperature outside the unit. Tell them to sit or lie down for around 10 minutes to rest before hitting the showers.
